“Comedy should make you feel good.”

-Carol Burnett

Austin Walker’s Varietyville is a semi-monthly live show that pays homage to the timeless spectacle of variety shows and vaudeville, serving as a playground for Tinseltown’s funniest and most peculiar performers.

Drawing inspiration from classic variety show legends like Dean Martin, Carol Burnett, and the Muppets, Varietyville blends scripted storytelling with improvisational blunders, guided by the antics of Founder and Mayor of Varietyville, Austin Laine Walker. Each show features characters from The Varietyvillians, the foot-stomping tunes of The Varietyville Sound, and side-splitting local talent.

Varietyville is a live multimedia experience with sketches, sound and video effects, and live performances of original music and covers. Supported by producer emeritus Saul Ilson (Emmy-nominated variety television producer), each 90-minute show is written and produced in less than a month, performed only once, and made possible by “Cue Card Colin” and his handwritten cue cards.

Following the tradition of variety shows past, performances feature recurring characters like Aunt Dicey and her dysfunctional family, poking gentle fun at Walker's Southern-fried central Florida roots. 1930’s comedian Jack Allen takes audiences back in time, delivering long-form jokes with old-fashioned punchlines. In The Mr. Tom Show, students learn lessons that often warrant Mr. Tom's arrest. Puppet pals Tippy, Jimothy, and Ancient Idol (aka AI) keep things light, while "Doctor" M.C. Gainey (Lost, Con Air) entertains with his bitter wisdom.

“This is what joy looks and sounds like.”

“There’s sketch, puppets, magic, musical performances, stand up comedy, improv…aliens have shown up before! It’s in the name, and it genuinely lives up to the concept of variety.”

“Expect the unexpected!”

“It’s amazing! Love the singing! Love the jokes!”

“Scrappy and full of heart!”

“I like that with very new act, you don’t know what’s coming. You see a lot of stuff. That’s what variety is…you come to see the unexpected.”
